Coosa River
The last free-flowing section of the Coosa River is below Jordon Dam near Wetumpka. For about six miles this stream is a hint of a once great river - flowing over gravel shoals and boulders; rapid flowing past islands of cypress trees drapped in Spanish moss. This section is still biologically vibrant. The Coosa Watershed is the largest and most biodiverse subwatershed of the Mobile River Basin in terms of overall number of fish, mussel and snail species. Historically the basin harbored 147 fish species, and 78 taxa of snail (60 species endemic to the Coosa). (For more information, please visit Rivers of Alabama)
