On a short early morning trip in May, the intense beauty of Clear Creek was over powering as I passed ferns unfolding and mountain laurel in bloom. Now add to this hemlocks with big leaf magnolias in bloom as well as unusual rock outcroppings, steep cliffs and narrow mysterious canyons. Two miles downstream from Camp McDowell lies the tallest waterfall in Alabama - under Smith Lake. I can only guess at the beauty that the river must have once been.
