Cahaba River
The Cahaba River is a free-flowing river known nationally for the diverse numbers of fish and mollusks. The Cahaba is The Crown Jewel of Alabama. It begins at the end of the Appalachian Mountains and flows through the only point in the entire 48 contigous states where the geological juncture of the end of the mountains meets the coastal plain. The largest stands of the Shoals Lily - to Alabamians, the Cahaba Lily grow in the river in Bibb County. This is a nationally significant river and a political hot potato The Birmingham Metropolitan Area is located at the headwaters and wanting to grow and develop the vast amount of land surrounding the Cahaba Watershed. The Watershed supplies high quality drinking water to one quarter of the population of Alabama. There have been many studies done that say the most cost effective way to have clean, affordable water is to preserve the Watershed. If Birmingham develops the watershed the monthly water bills will make Riley's tax plan look like a great deal compared to what the bills will be if we have to pay to have the water treated to remove the silt and pollutants.
